Description
The Aston War Memorial, dedicated to the 8th Battalion of The Warwickshire Regiment, is a regimental war memorial unveiled in 1921 by Major General Sir Robert Fanshawe, KCB, DSO.
Located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Aston, the memorial is made of limestone and features a pylon shape with gently tapered sides. It has a rectangular base and stands on a platform consisting of two steps.
The principal front faces southwest and includes a square plaque at its upper section, which contains an inset roundel displaying the regimental crest of a chained deer with a crown collar. Inscribed above and on either side of the roundel are the words ‘ITALY / FRANCE BELGIUM’. Below this, the memorial bears the inscription: ‘TO THE / GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF THE / OFFICERS / NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS / AND MEN OF THE / 8TH BATTALION / THE ROYAL WARWICKSHIRE / REGIMENT / WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919’. Immediately beneath is the inscription ‘AND / THE WORLD WAR / 1939 – 1945’. The deep plinth features a moulded upper edge, and the top of the monument is stepped back. A projecting central block displays a Latin cross in relief, topped by a cornice with two blocking courses that form the apex of the memorial.
The sides and rear of the memorial are inscribed with the names of battles in which the battalion fought.
