Description

The gatehouses, built in 1873-1874, formed a pair of symmetrical structures at the entrance to what was formerly the City of Birmingham Engineers Department Roundhouse stables. They are constructed of red brick with slate roofs and stone dressings.

The gatehouses are arranged in a T-plan form and are symmetrical. Both are two storeys high, with prominent gable ends facing the street. The roofs are steeply pitched and covered in Welsh slate, each featuring two chimney stacks. A brick dentil frieze runs below the eaves. The corner entrance elevations are polygonal, with a conical roofline. The windows are a symmetrical mix of flat-headed and pointed brick arches with painted rusticated surrounds. Larger windows on the gabled elevations are divided by painted stone mullions and are sash windows. Arrow-slit ventilators are present in each gable.

The entrance to the western gatehouse is on the northern elevation, while the entrance to the south-eastern gatehouse is on the eastern elevation. A secondary entrance is located to the rear of each building, within the courtyard, and all doors are timber panelled. The western gatehouse has an additional large door in the rear gable wing, while the mirrored elevation of the south-eastern gatehouse has a sash window.

The interior of the south-eastern gatehouse retains a significant amount of original architrave, including skirting, doorways, and panelled doors, along with surviving cast-iron fireplaces. The western gatehouse has been more altered, with a modern staircase inserted in a new location and rooms removed to create office space.
