Description
The Synagogue, built in 1856 by Yeoville Thomason, is a Grade II* listed building located on Blucher Street in the City Centre. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features an Italianate style. The building has a portico and a rose window in the gable above, flanked by two projecting wings that create a courtyard in front. Inside, the synagogue is seven bays long, with balconies behind a superimposed order designed in a Gibbsian manner. The Ark is situated in an apse that is also vaulted in the Gibbs style. The stained glass windows are mostly from around 1922 and later, and the interior includes original cast and gilded gasoliers.
