Description

Lloyd's Farmhouse Farm Park is a notable mid-18th century house that served as the main residence for the Birmingham branch of the Lloyd family from 1742 to 1912. Built by Sampson Lloyd II, the construction was likely completed by 1750. The house was originally designed in a square plan, featuring three storeys, red brick with sill bands, a moulded cornice, and a parapet. It has five window fronts with flush framed glazing bar sashes, flat painted gauged brick arches with keystones, and a fluted Doric pilastered doorway topped with a pediment.

The interior layout reflects typical 18th-century design, with a narrow central hall flanked by a dining room and parlour at the front, and service areas, a kitchen, and a staircase at the rear. The staircase is particularly fine, featuring an open string design with richly carved brackets, turned balusters, and fluted column newel posts.

In the late 1770s, the house was significantly enlarged by Sampson Lloyd III, which altered the original layout. The front door was blocked, and the former back kitchen was converted into the entrance hall. The old west wall of the original entrance was removed, and a large window was added to the west front, creating a new panelled room. As a result, Lloyd's Farmhouse is one of the most important surviving Georgian buildings in the city. Much of the interior decoration was convincingly restored in a Georgian style in the late 19th century. The house has recently undergone restoration and retains its grounds, which include a formal avenue of elms leading to the original entrance front.
