Description
The Convent of Our Lady of Mercy, located on Hunter's Road in Lozells, was built between 1840 and 1841 and designed by architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. This highly original and carefully detailed conventual building is constructed from red brick with stone dressings and features a simple and functional E-shaped plan, including a rear wing and cloister. The design reflects a straightforward Tudor-Gothic style, with some diapering in the brickwork. The building has stone-coped gable ends adorned with finials, steeply pitched slate roofs, and gabled dormers, along with external and ridge chimney stacks. The windows consist of simple stone mullioned casement and bay windows. The cloister at the rear has a simple exposed timber truss roof and tiled floors. The original chapel was destroyed during the war. The convent is part of a group of Pugin's innovatively designed religious houses.
