Description

The Eagle and Ball Public House, located at the corner of Penn Street and Gopsal Street, dates from around 1840 to 1850. This three-storey building is constructed of red brick with stucco trim. Both elevations feature three bays, with a two-storey wing extending to Gopsal Street. A first-floor sill band runs along both fronts, and the building has a hipped slate roof with flat eaves and corniced brick chimney stacks.

The public house fronts are adorned with panelled pilasters beneath a deep entablature. The windows have panelled risers and late 19th-century leaded glazing. There is a corner entrance along with two secondary doors. The upper-floor windows feature revealed glazing bar sashes set within architrave surrounds. The first-floor windows are embellished with consoles to their sills and cornices topped with a blocking course, while the centre first-floor window on each front is pedimented. The five-bay wing includes blind windows and a central segmental carriage arch, along with a stucco eaves band. The right-hand bays have a steeper pitch on the roof.
