Description

The railway bridge, built in 1837-1838, was designed by Joseph Locke to carry the Grand Junction Railway into Curzon Street Terminus Station. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings.

The bridge features a single span over the Digbeth Branch Canal, with curved wing walls on either side. The towpath is located to the east, and the 1837-1838 section now supports a roadway. The north face of the bridge is finished in ashlar at the center, flanked by brick wing walls that have stone dressings. The stonework displays banded and chamfered rustication. The broad arch is segmental and is flanked by pilasters, with a slightly projecting impost block. The voussoirs of the arch have chamfered edges and are arranged in groups of three. Above the arch, there is a dentilled cornice, and the parapet is plain. Some sections of the wing walls have been rebuilt, with the left side using blue engineering brick.

The southern face of the bridge is adjacent to a later 19th-century extension, but the lower part of its arch, which also features chamfered voussoirs like the north face, remains visible underneath. The intrados of the vault is made of slightly skewed red brick, and the impost block extends as a deep band at the level where the arch begins.
