Description

The sewer gas exhaust pipe, approximately 20 meters south of No. 39 Leam Terrace in Royal Leamington Spa, is a decorative structure dating from around the early 19th century. Standing about 4 meters high, this cast iron pipe is circular in shape and features a tapering base adorned with mouldings and a frieze of lotus leaves. Towards the top, there is a second decorative section that includes an applied scallop detail and rows of knobbed details. An oval plate at the base displays the number 120.

Leam Terrace was built between 1828 and 1836 as part of the planned expansion of Leamington Spa, characterized by its wide street lined with Regency villas. The sewer system likely dates from this same period, suggesting that the installation of this and another sewer gas exhaust pipe was intended to vent dangerous gases accumulating in the sewers beneath the streets. Both pipes remain in their original locations.

This sewer gas exhaust pipe is designated for its intact and decorative design, representing a rare type of street furniture, its early role in the development of underground sewage systems, and its strong group value with the other sewer gas exhaust pipe and the listed Regency villas along Leam Terrace, all part of the town's early 19th-century expansion.
