Description

This is a practically continuous range of small properties along West Street, with origins in the medieval period. Evidence suggests some parts date back to the 16th century or earlier, and much of the remainder retains original 17th-century timber framing. While portions have been renewed in brickwork and roughcast has been applied, the group is considered worthy of preservation. The roofs are mainly of old tiles, with a few incorporating dormers, creating an interesting informal appearance, especially when viewed from the rear gardens.

No. 49 is a 16th-century, two-storey plus attic house featuring close-set studding with diagonal bracing. The first floor is jettied and supported by large console brackets. It has two small, flush dormers and a brindle tile roof, both modern restorations. The front features a plain, replica oak door and two modern, splayed ground-floor window bays.

Nos. 51 and 53 are later, 18th-century properties with two-storey plus attic designs. They have two-window frontages constructed of red brickwork, showcasing camberheaded openings, stone rustications, a string band, and a plinth. They contain three sash windows within cased frames and two hipped dormers on the upper floors.

Numbers 49 to 63 (odd) are designated as a group.
