Description
The Church of St John Baptist is a Grade I listed parish church, originally built as a private chapel for the now-demolished Honiley Hall in 1723, likely designed by Francis Smith of Warwick. This small Baroque church remains largely unaltered.
The exterior features a nave with north and south round-headed windows that have continuous imposts and keyblocks. The westernmost window is smaller and includes a bullseye above, flanked by giant pilasters. There are pilasters at each end of the nave, and a parapet with a heavy cornice encircles the semicircular apse, which also contains round-headed windows. The west tower, composed of three diminishing stages with pilastered angles, is capped by a cornice that matches the apse. The top stage features bullseyes and volutes at the angles, topped with obelisks and a short octagonal stone spire that has a ball finial and weathervane. At the base of the tower, there is a round-headed west doorway with bullseyes above and an original panelled door inside.
Inside, the church has marble giant Corinthian pilasters in the apse, which lack an entablature, and a modillion cornice around the plain ceiling. The round tower arch leads to a panelled gallery supported by two Corinthian marble columns. The altar rail features large balusters, and there are box pews with fielded panels. The polygonal pulpit also has fielded panels, and a small circular marble font is set into a niche under the tower.
