Description
The Athenaeum, located at 1781 Church Street on the east side, is a significant building originally occupied by The Warwick & County Club. It features a monumental facade with five windows across two storeys. The lower storey is constructed of rusticated stonework, while the upper storey combines stonework and Roman cement. Notable architectural elements include twin pilasters between the bays, a moulded cornice with a fluted frieze, and a balustraded parapet adorned with ornamental urns. The central bay projects slightly and is topped with a pediment. It has a central three-light window flanked by attached columns, with a segmental-headed window above it. Some decorative features are quite unique, including acanthus leaf capitals and a guilloche band below the segmental-headed window. All windows are sash types set in reveals with glazing bars. The building has undergone significant restoration in the 19th century and has an old tiled roof. It is part of a group of listed buildings on Church Street (East Side).
