Description

These buildings at 46 and 48 High Street represent an early 18th century refronting of what was likely an earlier structure, presenting a unified design. The two-storey building, with an attic, has a six-window facade constructed of red brick and painted stone dressings. The windows are sash windows set within cased frames, lacking glazing bars. They are topped by gauged brick arches, stone keyblocks, and moulded capping. A splayed stucco plinth runs along the base, and a moulded stone cornice sits at the top of the facade. Rusticated quoins decorate the left and right sides. The entrance to number 46 features similar rustication, including a flat arch, keyblocks, and a moulded cornice above a six-fielded-panelled door and a rectangular fanlight. Number 48 has a six-fielded-panelled door and fanlight fitted into what was originally a window opening, and includes a later 19th-century, incongruous splayed bay. The roof is covered with modern tiles and is punctuated by three pedimented dormers. The bay to the left of number 46 has been re-faced with stucco.

Nos 30 to 52 (even) comprise a visual group.
