Description
Circa mid-16th century in origin, the farmhouse was largely rebuilt in the early 19th century, utilising its original foundations. It is an irregular L-shaped range of two storeys. The steeply pitched plain tile roof has gabled ends. The western side of the northern wing reveals a length of original red sandstone ashlar splayed plinth. Beneath the north end of this wing is a mid-16th century vaulted cellar with two blocked openings on the west side. This wing is constructed of red brick with segmental arched window openings, and features mostly modern windows.
The south front of the eastern arm includes a mid-16th century two-storey gabled bay of red sandstone ashlar. It has a blocked window with four ogee-headed lights under a flat head with splayed jambs and cills. Above this is a three-light square-headed window with ovolo moulded jambs and mullions. The north front of the eastern arm is of red brick with segmental arched window openings, housing three-light casements to the ground and first floors. One four-light window is to the left of the front door, all with glazing bars. A four-panelled door is set within a gabled timber porch.
At the eastern end of the north front is a two-storey projecting gabled bay; the lower storey is red brick and supports an early 18th century timber-framed upper storey, with painted render infill, featuring circles on the west side and lozenges on the north. There are three-light casements with glazing bars at ground and first floor levels. To the east and at right angles to the 18th century bay is a small two-storey early 19th century red brick addition. The house originated as a demesne farm of Henry II.
