Description
The Angel Hotel, dating from around 1818, is a building with later additions and alterations located on Regent Street in Royal Leamington Spa. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof and ridge stacks. The architectural style is Neo-Classical.
The exterior displays two and three storeys with attics, comprising four bays, the fourth of which is wider and of two storeys. A chamfered plinth is visible, along with quoins to the ground floor at either end. A double set of quoins are present between the third and fourth bays, surmounted by Tuscan pilasters to the first floor. A first-floor band runs horizontally. The windows are predominantly 6/6 sashes, with a tripartite sash in the second bay incorporating 6/6 sashes flanked by 2/2 sashes, featuring an apron below and framed panel above. A 3/6 sash is present between the first and third bays on the second floor. A continuous frieze, cornice, and low parapet complete the facade. The ground floor features three steps leading to a four-fielded-panel door with a fanlight, set within a roll-moulded surround and cavetto-moulded round arch with a central keystone. Part-fluted pilasters curve outwards, forming brackets supporting a deep cornice. Other ground floor windows include a 2/2 sash, a 1/1 sash, and a long casement.
The right return elevation is three storeys high and features seven bays. It incorporates a plinth and channelled rustication on the ground floor, with Tuscan pilasters rising to the first and second floors between several bays. The first and second floors feature 6/6 sashes with sills, and flat arches with keystones; those on the first floor include aprons. A frieze, cornice and blocking course are also present. An elliptical carriage arch with a Gibbs surround occupies bays four and five on the ground floor, with 8/8 sashes flanking it. Roof lights are visible in the attic.
The left return is three storeys and four bays, including quoins and a Tuscan pilaster on the right bay. A band is located above the first floor, with a tripartite window featuring a 6/6 sash flanked by 2/2 sashes. The second floor incorporates tripartite sliding sash windows with a central section of 12 panes flanked by 6 panes to the right bay. Other windows on this side are a mix of 3/6 and 6/6 sashes set within flat rusticated arches. The ground floor has a tripartite 1/1 sash.
The interior has not been inspected. Regent Street, originally named Cross Street, was laid out between 1808 and 1814.
