Description
The dovecote located immediately south-west of the Magistrates' Court in Stratford-upon-Avon dates back to the 17th century and has undergone later alterations and restoration. It is constructed of red brick with some buff headers and features a pyramidal tile roof topped with a lantern. The eaves include chamfered brick infill between the ends of the rafters. The front side has a blind wall, while the left side displays buff headers. The right side features a brick platt band and significant 20th-century repairs, including an entrance with a concrete lintel above a 20th-century plank door. Above this entrance, there are pigeon holes in a panel over another 20th-century plank door. The rear has a later lean-to outshut with a blocked wide entrance and a blocked opening to the upper floor. The restored square lantern, which has a hipped roof and leaded glazing, is topped with a weathervane that features the initials 'JH' (referring to Joseph Hunt, 1645-1720) and the date 1684, pierced in a pennant. This dovecote is an interesting historical survival.
