Description

Cromwell House (No.84) and Goodrest (No.84A) are two former public houses located on High Street in Henley-in-Arden. Originally known as The Bear Inn, this building dates back to the 17th century, with mentions from 1654, and has undergone alterations in the 19th century and around 1928. The structure is primarily of brick with some timber framing and features a gabled tile roof, complete with a brick cross-axial stack and rear stacks, one of which has a cluster of four diagonal shafts.

The building has two storeys plus an attic and presents a three-window range on its façade. There is a plat band above the ground floor and wide eaves to the left of the centre. The right end showcases brick quoins, while paired timber-framed gables are located to the right of the centre. The ground floor includes a recessed entrance to the right of centre, featuring a plank door within a moulded surround that returns to the inner left, topped by a gabled canopy. To the left of the entrance, there is one segmental-headed window, and two more are situated to the right, all with three-light transomed casements; two of these have iron opening casements, while the left window has small-paned glazing.

The left end, known as Goodrest, features a two-storey gabled bay window with timber framing and 1:4:1-light leaded glazing on each floor. The first floor has a window with a two-light small-paned casement and a canted oriel with a hipped roof over a 1:3:1-light transomed and leaded glazing. The attic level contains two three-light windows with leaded glazing and iron opening casements. Goodrest also has a plaque with early 20th-century lettering that reads "GOODREST," along with enriched guttering, downspouts, and rainwater heads dated 1928.

The left return features 20th-century fenestration and an entrance with a gabled canopy. The rear wing includes close-studded timber framing and a stack with clustered shafts associated with Cromwell House. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to contain timber framing, a wide fireplace, and a 17th-century staircase with turned balusters.
