Description

The Limes is a house located on Church Street in Alcester, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with a 17th-century rear wing and a front section from the mid to late 18th century. The building was altered in the mid-19th century. It features scored imitation ashlar render with whitewashed quoins and a mid-19th century moulded wood modillion cornice. The roof is slate, complemented by brick chimneys. The house is L-shaped, three stories high, and has a three-window range.

The central door is decorated with panelling, likely from the mid-19th century, and includes a fanlight with glazing bars and a convex central section, along with a panelled intrados. The doorcase is colourwashed rendered in the mid-19th century, featuring plain Doric pilasters and an entablature. There are two-storey canted bay windows, and the sashes throughout include a round-headed window above the door with Gothick glazing. The rear of the house is brick with two parallel gables, and it has wooden mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights.

The small 17th-century timber-framed wing has been continued in 19th-century brick. Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase with a narrow open well, winders, and turned balusters. A room at the rear features a mid-18th century carved wood fireplace, and there are remains of an open fireplace. Some doors are two-panelled with H-L hinges.
