Description

The gates, gate piers, and walls located to the south of Wootton Hall, along with Wootton Bridge, date back to around 1690, with the gates added around 1906 and a milestone inserted on the bridge in 1806. The structures include a low parapet wall extending approximately 6 meters to the west and 125 meters to the east along Stratford Road, transitioning into a balustrade that runs for about 24 meters to the bridge.

The gates are made of cast iron, while the piers and balustrade are constructed from lias stone ashlar, featuring replacement cement balusters and a reddish-brown brick bridge. The double gates are adorned with bars that have panels of scrollwork and scrolled cresting, and they incorporate piers topped with lamps and pedestrian gates. The main gate piers exhibit rusticated shafts and an entablature, with the left pier topped by a ball finial.

The balustrade curves towards the piers and includes a moulded plinth with bulbous balusters and shaped copings, interrupted by piers that have a moulded base and cornice. The balustrade continues to the bridge, which features a milestone on the north side inscribed with distances to various locations, and a pier on the south side that commemorates the erection of the stone parapet by G H Capewell Hughes in 1906. The bridge itself has three round arches with ashlar keystones and cutwaters. A watercolour from the mid-18th century depicts the piers and balustrade as part of the park landscape. All these listed elements contribute to the group value of the Wootton Hall Estate (Wootton Park).
