Description
The railings and gates on the north side of the churchyard of St Peter, along with two gates to the west, date from around 1825 to 1830, with a mid-19th century inserted gate. They are made of cast iron set on a stone-coped brick plinth. The railings feature moulded shafts and arrow heads, with those from the west end, which are attached to No.47 Church Street, joined in pairs by panels that have pierced quatrefoils.
The gate located to the north-west of the church tower has cast-iron open-work piers adorned with cusping and Tudor-flower cresting, along with an enriched gate and a 20th-century overthrow with a lantern. A similar gate is found at the west end leading to No.47 Church Street. The plinth ramps up on each side of the gate to Hampton Lucy House, which has similar cast-iron piers with pyramidal caps and paired enriched gates.
Additionally, there is a mid-19th century gate between the school and the north transept, featuring ashlar piers with cornices and swept caps topped with finials that have foliate carving. The paired wrought-iron gates have fish-tail finials and scroll work in a grid pattern on the lower parts, likely erected for the use of school children.
