Description

A row of four cottages, dating from circa 1600 with a 16th-century cross wing, is located in Tiddington, Stratford-upon-Avon. The cottages are timber-framed with plaster infill and painted rubble, and have thatched roofs with brick stacks. They consist of a four-unit plan with a projecting cross wing. The cottages are two storeys high and have a five-window front. The left-hand end is built of rubble and has a lateral stack with a brick shaft. The right-hand end has a jettied upper floor. Three entrances have 20th-century plank or half-glazed doors. The ground-floor windows are 2-light casements; the window on the left has leaded glazing, while the one on the right has small-paned glazing. The first floor has two gabled dormers with thatch birds and weatherboarding, each with a 2-light casement, the left one with leaded glazing. An axial stack is located on the front ridge. The cross wing has a battened door and 2-light windows on the ground floor, a left one and a 2+2-light window on the right, all with leaded glazing; the first floor has a similar 4-light window. The framing is square, with a close-studded wing featuring 1st floor tension braces, a tie-beam, and a collar truss. The rear of the cottages includes dormer windows and a large 20th-century single-storey flat-roof addition. The right return features an external lateral stack and a lean-to outshut, with 3-light windows. The interior of No.15 contains a noted fireplace to the left with moulded jambs continued around a bressumer, and an ashlar overmantel. A narrow sign board on the left end reads "SCHEDULED FOR PRESERVATION AS HISTORIC BUILDINGS UNDER THE TOWN PLANNING ACT."
