Description

Holbrook Grange is a country house dating to 1804, with a left range added in 1847, originally built for John Caldecott. The house is constructed of sandstone ashlar with sill courses and moulded cornices; the right return side and rear are colourwashed brick and the service wing to the rear is brick. Slate hipped roofs are concealed behind parapets and there are brick ridge and internal stacks. It is arranged in a T-plan with a wing to the rear. The design is Neoclassical.

The three-storey, three-window main range is symmetrical, with a fielded six-panelled door and overlight featuring a fanlight. A porch is supported by two Greek Doric columns in antis. The ground floor windows are tripartite sashes with moulded frames and panelled blind boxes set within segmental arches with fan detail. First-floor windows are sashes, and the second floor has six-pane sashes. The parapet is ornamented with fluted urns at the angles. The two-storey, two-window left range has 19th-century blind boxes to the ground floor. The rear elevation is irregular, featuring a two-storey canted bay. Datestones are present on the rear wing and an addition.

Inside, the entrance hall has a stone-flagged floor and a moulded dentil cornice. A late 19th-century dummy fireplace is present. A moulded basket arch leads to the staircase, which is a curved dog-leg design with turned mahogany balusters and a moulded handrail. A room to the left has a husk garland frieze and leaf cornice, and a reeded white marble fireplace with a central plaque. A room in the left range mirrors this detailing and includes a white marble fireplace with consoles. A room at the rear has reeded window architraves. Moulded six-panelled doors are featured throughout the house.
