Description

This is a row of houses, now shops, located at 2-8 Church Street in Atherstone. They were built in the early to mid-18th century and have undergone some alterations in the 19th century. The buildings are constructed of Flemish bond brick with a string course, and all but No. 2 on the left are covered in color wash. They feature an old plain-tile roof with brick stacks at the rear and have a double-depth plan.

The row consists of two storeys and an attic with a six-window range. No. 2 has a 20th-century shop front. No. 4 features a mid to late 19th-century shop front with pilasters and an entablature, along with a recessed half-glazed four-panel door and overlight. Each house has a 16-pane sash window with a rusticated rendered flat arch on the first floor and a boarded-up hipped roof dormer.

No. 6 includes a mid to late 19th-century moulded four-panel door with an overlight and a moulded wood doorcase with chamfered pilasters and an entablature topped with a shallow cornice hood. It also has an early 19th-century canted shop bay with glazing bars, a plank door to a passage on the right, and two 18th-century wood mullioned and transomed three-light windows above, featuring a horizontal glazing bar. There is also a boarded-up hipped roof dormer.

No. 8 has a 19th-century shop front with a half-glazed door and two-light windows to the right and above. Nos. 6 and 8 have gauged brick flat arches over their openings. The interiors are noted to have some chamfered beams.
