Description

The Duke of Suffolk's Monument, located in Astley, is a Grade II listed structure dating from around 1891. It is made of sandstone and features a roughly curved conical shape, measuring approximately 1.9 metres in diameter and 2 metres in height. A prominent vertical panel on the monument bears an inscription that notes Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, who was the Lord of the Manor of Astley and the father of Lady Jane Grey, took refuge in a large hollow oak tree at this site. This oak tree was blown down in 1891.
