Description
The stable block at Astley Castle is a stable and coach house range built around the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of regularly coursed sandstone, with the rear wall made of brick, and features a 20th-century plain-tile hipped roof. The building has a T-plan layout with a wing at the rear and is designed in the Gothick Revival style, characterized by 4-centred arches throughout.
The stable block is one storey high and consists of five bays. The symmetrical front has a moulded cornice and an embattled parapet. The central three bays project slightly and feature an embattled gable parapet. There is a double-chamfered doorway with a plank door, and the windows display Y-tracery. The gable includes a large moulded quatrefoil opening, which is partially bricked-up and damaged. The first and fifth bays have large bricked-up double-chamfered arches that were likely originally coach houses.
At the rear, there is a gabled wing at the center, with a later cart entrance on the right that has an added gable above. Inside, some of the original roof structure remains, but the interior fittings are said to have been largely replaced. This stable block is a notable example of 18th-century Gothick Revival architecture.
