Description
Single Tower Farmhouse and attached walls, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with some alterations from the 19th century. It was likely built for Sir Roger Newdigate of Arbury Hall. The structure features sandstone rubble with a rear of raking Flemish bond brick and plain-tile roofs. The tower has a flat roof and a coped parapet, with brick ridges and internal stacks. The building is L-shaped, with a wing on the left at the rear and a round tower at the angle. The tower exhibits a very simple Gothic style, standing two storeys high with a three-storey tower and a four-window range. The front faces at right angles to the road, with the tower featuring arched openings. A 19th-century half-glazed four-panelled door with an overlight and fanlight is present, along with a second-floor window of two fixed lights. The lower round stair turret on the left has small arched casements. The central two-window range includes a 19th-century four-panelled door with a hipped plain-tile hood supported by chamfered brackets. To the right and on the first floor are three-light casements, all openings having chamfered stone surrounds and windows throughout featuring glazing bars. The left range mimics a square tower, with a second floor that has a coped parapet acting as a screen wall, concealing an internal stack. The ground floor has a segmental-arched one-light casement in a chamfered stone surround. The left return side has similar three-light mullioned windows, while the right return side facing the road includes a one-storey and attic wing with a gable dormer and one- and two-light plain casements. The tower has a two-light straight-headed casement and an arched window above. The rear of the building is irregular. Inside, the tower contains circular rooms, with the ground-floor room featuring a moulded wood cornice above the fireplace and winder stairs. A room in the two-storey range has a large open fireplace. The walls attached at right angles to the tower and the left return side have coping and doorways with stone lintels.
