Description
Blyth Mill is a watermill built in 1754, with an early 19th-century extension for the wheelhouse at the north end. The mill is constructed of red brick in mainly English bond and features a plain-tiled roof with a dentil eaves cornice. On the west side, there is a timber gabled lucam, which is now clad in corrugated iron and supported by timber brackets. The building has a straight north-south range of six bays and includes an undershot water wheel from the mid-19th century located in the addition at the north end. It stands two storeys high with a loft and has five first-floor windows, three of which are set under segmental arches. There is a hoist opening with a boarded door, and at the ground floor, there are two doorways, one of which has a split door. A segmental arch leads to an opening that was once the site of the mill race, which was diverted in the mid-19th century and is now located under the north end of the mill. The date and the initials R and G are inscribed on a sandstone block at a window sill. Inside, the cast iron water wheel and gears are intact, along with three overdriven stones, and the internal undershot waterwheel dates from 1861.
