Description
The boundary wall and railings, gates, and gatepiers at the front of Horton Hall date from the 17th and 19th centuries. The structure features coursed stone and cast and wrought iron elements. The wall is approximately 2 meters high on the south-west and north-west sides, with stepped coping above the entrance lintel on the north-west side, which is inscribed with "TE 1663," possibly indicating re-used materials.
To the south-east, there is a mid-19th century entrance screen that is about 40 meters long, designed for symmetry, with a low wall to the left of the center and a ramped plinth to the right, ascending the incline. The screen includes square stone piers with moulded capping at the corners and at the central gateway, where the piers are monolithic and battered, featuring panelled Greek revival capings with antae at the angles. Between the piers are cast iron spearhead railings, and there is a wrought iron decorative central gate. The initials "T. E." refer to Timothy Edge, who was responsible for much of the work at Horton Hall.
