Description

Le Refuge is a summerhouse, wall, archway, and steps located immediately east of The Loggia. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of ashlar stone with herringbone tooling and smooth-faced dressings. The structure includes an approximately 50-yard-long wall that extends eastward from The Loggia. At the eastern end, there is a 3-centred archway with panelled pilasters that provides access to a flight of steps. The western end features a summerhouse with a Tuscan portico that has two columns set in antis, a frieze inscribed "LE REFUGE," and a wide central bay leading to a segmental-headed doorway. This feature is part of the significant garden layout at Alton Towers, which is registered at Grade I on the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission Gardens Register.
