Description
The Primitive Methodist Chapel in Rushton Spencer was built in 1815 and extended in the late 20th century. It is constructed of coursed stone and features a clay plain tile roof with stone-coped gable ends and shaped kneelers.
This single-storey chapel has a rectangular plan, with a Sunday school added to the south end around the late 20th century. The east elevation has three bays, each with round-arch windows set in dressed stone frames. These windows have wooden sixteen-pane fixed lights, with the center window featuring an opening top light. A similar but smaller window is located in the north gable end. The rear wall is blind and has a small outshut on the left side. The Sunday school extension at the south end is made of brick and has a lower roof.
Inside, the chapel has a ceiling and plastered walls, with simple furnishings that include 19th-century benches with shaped ends, a panelled rostrum with brass candlesticks, and marble wall monuments.
Cloud Chapel is noted for being one of the earliest Primitive Methodist chapels built.
