Description
The former malt-house, located at the rear of 28 High Street and bordering Adies Alley, dates from the late 18th century and has undergone later alterations and additions. It is constructed of brick and features a tile roof. The building is a long, rectangular structure with four storeys and a gable facing. The end of the building has a four-light wooden-mullioned window on the ground floor, along with loading bays on the first and second floors that have paired plank doors and a hoist bracket above, supported by timber lintels.
The left side facing Adies Alley displays a cogged brick cornice and has varied window styles, including unglazed windows that are mostly segmental-headed, four-light windows on the ground floor, and mostly shuttered windows above, with some mullioned windows on the first floor and a loading door. The left end of this side is from the 19th century, featuring a segmental-headed entrance and window. The right side is similar but has fewer openings, with a later loading bay located under a gablet to the right of centre. The rear of the building includes a pointed window with intersecting glazing bars.
Inside, the malt-house retains heavy beams on the floors, king post trusses, and some remaining hoppers. Some windows still have sliding shutters with wooden handles. This structure is an interesting example of industrial heritage.
