Description

Littywood House is a house that likely dates back to around 1400, with later additions from the 16th century, and alterations from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It features a timber frame with cruck trusses, brick walling, and a tiled roof with brick ridges and stacks at the right end. The front of the house faces south and consists of three ranges that include single storey and attic, as well as two and three storey sections. The left range, which contains the former open hall from around 1400, has an entrance on the right, two sash windows in the centre and left, and two dormers above. The centre range, added in the late 16th century, has additional sash windows and two dormers, while the right range, from the late 18th century, is three storeys tall. The various wings at the rear have casement windows. The interior retains a massive full cruck truss at the west end of the former hall, which features principals slotted for wind-braces and two tiers of purlins. The truss that divides the two-bay hall was originally open and is of the arch-braced collar-beam type. The screens passage may have been reconstructed later. The left section of the left range was altered around 1800 and again in 1954. The central range, likely once a self-contained house, has a massive chimney and much of the framing is visible on the first floor. The right range includes cellars and baking ovens.
