Description

Drayton Road Cottages are a pair of cottages located in Swynnerton, built around 1860 by George Devey for the Duke of Sutherland. They are constructed from English garden wall bond red brick, stone, plaster, tile-hanging, and timber-framing with plaster panels, topped with clay plain tile roofs featuring deep eaves and verges with bargeboards. The cottages have a brick axial stack with diagonally-set shafts and a gable-end stack with a stone base, brick shaft, and set-offs with brick tumbling-in.

The cottages are L-shaped in plan, with a cross-wing on the right extending to the rear and a single-storey service range behind the left end. They are designed in the Vernacular Revival style and feature a single storey and attic. The asymmetrical front has a large jettied timber-framed gable on the right, supported by large curved brackets, with herring-bone pattern framing at the apex. The ground floor has a seven-light window, while the attic has a five-light window. To the left, there are three and one-light windows in cambered brick openings, along with a plastered gabled dormer above, all fitted with leaded-pane casements. The doorway is located to the left of centre and has an open porch with a gabled canopy supported by timber posts. The left corner of the building features stone quoins that extend partway up. The left gable-end is made of brick, plastered, and tile-hung, with a large stack to the left that includes a round oven at the base topped with a tiled conical roof. The rear of the cottages includes a large timber-framed cross-wing gable on the left, a smaller brick gable, and a single-storey service wing on the right, along with a plastered gabled dormer at the centre.

The interior has not been inspected. Drayton Road Cottages are a notable example of George Devey's Vernacular Revival style.
