Description

Brassworks Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1794, located facing the Trent and Mersey Canal. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a graduated slate roof, with a tile roof at the rear and brick end stacks. The building has a central staircase plan and is designed in a Georgian style. It stands three storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window range, topped with a cornice. The entrance includes a doorcase with an architrave, frieze, and a consoled pediment, with beading on the consoles, and a six-panel door. The windows have sills, with the ground and first-floor windows featuring wedge lintels and 12-pane sashes, while the ground floor windows are boarded. The second floor retains remnants of 6-pane sashes. On the right side, there is a small window with a cambered arch. The rear of the house has a modillioned brick cornice, a tall lean-to outshut, and two gabled wings, one of which has a lean-to outshut; the left wing is from the 19th century, and its windows are boarded. Inside, there is an open well stair with an open string and nosed treads, although the balusters are missing. Some rooms feature cornices and six-panel doors, and there is a cellar. The farmhouse was originally built as part of a brass foundry that was served by the canal.
