Description
The Bowling Green Arch and Gates, dating from around 1730, serve as a screen to the former bowling green. Constructed from rusticated ashlar, the arch features a central moulded round-headed opening, which is adorned with a fluted keystone and supported by Doric capitals. Flanking the arch are fluted pilasters on pedestals, with round-headed niches on either side and blind square panels above. The outer pilasters display banded rustication and are topped with a full Doric entablature, which is further embellished with vase ornaments on both sides and the base of a central ornament. The gates, made of wrought iron, incorporate the initials of Peter Giffard.
