Description

The former stables and attached gate pier, located approximately 40 yards north-west of Hamstall Hall, is a structure likely dating from the 17th century, with significant alterations made in the 18th century. The building features red brick outer walls and a timber-framed core, topped with a plain tile roof. It consists of a five-bay range that is aligned north-east to south-west and faces south-east, standing one storey high with a loft.

The façade includes five segmental-headed doors, with a large two-leaf door positioned to the right. There are small segmental-headed windows on the ground floor and two boarded openings for the loft on the left side. A central gabled loft door is also present, along with stone mullioned windows at the rear. The attached gate pier, located to the south-west, has a square section and a pyramidal cap, flanking one side of a blocked entrance to the outer courtyard of Hamstall Hall.

Inside, the structure features timber-framed cross walls and some close-studded framing at the rear. The roof includes cambered tie beams, v-struts above the collars, two pairs of purlins, and a ridge piece, with some curved wind braces. Much of the timber used in the construction is reused and likely dates back to the 16th century. Notably, there is a reused 15th-century aisle post in the south-west corner, which has double ogee mouldings and probably originated from a now-demolished section of Hamstall Hall.
