Description

The Manor House, also known as Uttoxeter House or Lord Gardner's House, is a large mansion located on High Street, dating back to 1756, with significant alterations and additions from the 19th century. The core of the house is from the 16th century or possibly earlier, though only the base of a large central stone chimney stack remains, now topped with later chimneys. The front of the house is primarily from the mid-18th century and features two storeys, with two windows flanking a three-window bay in the center. Constructed of red brick with stone dressings, modern alterations include a reshaped parapet and the addition of stone balls at the corners. There are two ground floor bay windows, and a conservatory, which is now used as a garage, has been added to the side. A stone porch, also modern, is present.

Inside, the house is largely decorated in a period style but retains the original 17th-century staircase, which has modern finials added. A "priest's hole" is located near the central chimney stack, with an exit through the walls and an entrance in the attic. The "Admiral Gardner's Room" features well-preserved early 18th-century panelling, and above each door is a projecting carved and gilded griffin. The contemporary chimneypiece also showcases gilded carved ornament. The house is notable as the birthplace of Admiral Alan Gardner in 1742, and there is a plaque on the front garden wall commemorating him. Additionally, there is another well-preserved oak panelled room with a contemporary mantelpiece.
