Description
The pump house at Branston Depot was built in 1918 and is an example of Edwardian Baroque architecture. Constructed from English bond brick with artificial stone dressings, it features a flat roof and is a single storey building. The structure has a square plan with three bays on the east and west elevations and five bays on the north and south elevations. The corners are canted and framed by paired pilasters that rise to a corniced entablature, which is elevated above the parapet level at the entrance and corners. The windows are semi-circular, adorned with radiating glazing bars, set above moulded sills and recessed aprons, with triple keys extending to the entablature. The entrance on the north side has panelled double doors within a moulded stone surround, flanked by pilasters. Inside, there are brick-lined wells and a later 20th-century pumping plant. This pump house is a distinguished example of industrial architecture in the Edwardian Baroque style and is prominently located in front of the similarly styled office block of the former National Machine Gun Factory at Burton-on-Trent.
