Description

The former coach house and stable block adjoining Calwich Abbey to the east, including the gatepiers to the stable yard, was built around 1849-50. This structure features ashlar stonework and slate roofs with coped verges, as well as ashlar ridge stacks. The layout consists of a coach house range to the south and stable ranges to the east and west, all surrounding a rectangular courtyard.

The south range is one storey with an attic and has a configuration of 1:4:1 bays, with the eaves level of the outer bays slightly lower. It includes four blocked segmental-headed coach arches; the two central arches have top-opening windows in the upper half, while the outer two have doors inserted. There is a stable door at each end bay with a six-pane glazing bar overlight. The range features six gabled dormers with shaped and moulded coping, each containing 12-pane glazing bar sashes with horns. A central cupola with a lead-covered, concave-sided cap is topped with a finial, and below it is a clock in a circular keyed surround.

The west range is also one storey with an attic and has doors to the right and left of the centre, each with six-pane glazing bar overlights. It includes top and bottom opening windows, one to the left, one to the right, and two in the centre, along with a gabled dormer with shaped and moulded coping above each door. There is a hipped louvre to the right of centre.

The east range mirrors the west range in design, featuring doors to the right and left of the centre with six-pane glazing bar overlights, top and bottom opening windows, and a gabled dormer with shaped and moulded coping over each door, as well as louvres to the right and left of centre.

The gatepiers and walls consist of central ashlar piers with square sections and moulded caps, along with coped ashlar walls. This building is contemporary with the remains of Calwich Abbey, constructed in the same period of 1849-50.
