Description
This is a former rifle range target wall dating from approximately 1914. The wall is constructed of brick with a cast-iron facing to the central stop wall.
The target wall runs along a north-west to south-east alignment and is approximately 61 metres in length. The primary south-west face has a symmetrical design composed of a central stop wall flanked by two screen walls. The stop wall is recessed with splayed ends and a raised upper section. Three rows of rectangular cast iron panels are bolted to the lower half of the stop wall, and both the iron panels and the exposed brickwork above display numerous bullet holes. To the left-hand re-entrant wall, which connects the target wall to the left-hand screen wall, are doorways leading to a former target store located at the rear of the range. The right-hand re-entrant wall is blank. The screen walls are supported by five regularly spaced lateral buttresses with offsets. Single lateral buttresses with offsets are also present at each end. The rear of the screen walls is supported by lateral buttresses, while the stop wall is supported by battered buttresses, all with offsets. The copings and offsets are made of blue brick, with some stone used for the offsets at the rear of the stop wall.
A two-storey target store is situated in the re-entrant angle on the right-hand side, with slate roofs and cambered-headed window and door openings on its north-west and north-east faces. A single-storey building, with a late 20th-century extension, is located in the re-entrant angle on the left-hand side. The original section of this building features a cambered-headed window, while the extension has a flat-headed doorway with a concrete lintel. Both ranges are now covered by a late 20th-century reinforced concrete roof.
The former target store's original section has a blue brick floor and retains the handle and pulley wheel from the previous mechanised target system. Surviving ceiling beams support a single queen post truss roof, though the original floorboards have been removed. The later addition has had its ceiling beams removed and features a single king post truss roof with rafter ends resting on brick corbels. The single-storey building on the left-hand side has plain brick walls and no other notable features.
