Description

The Burton upon Trent War Memorial features a 2.25-meter high bronze figure of winged Victory, which stands atop a bronze globe. The figure raises a downward-pointing sword in its right hand and holds a laurel wreath in its left. This is set on a 4.5-meter high, 2.4-meter wide, and 1.8-meter deep ornate Classical pedestal made of Portland stone, which has cherubs with winged helmets at each of its four corners.

The pedestal includes bronze relief inscription plaques on the front and back faces, along with bronze figures of St George, who stands with his foot on a dragon and is 1.8 meters high, and a classical figure of Peace, who holds a dove and is also 1.8 meters high, positioned on either side.

The front plaque bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORIOUS AND IMMORTAL MEMORY OF THE OFFICERS NON COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN OF BURTON UPON TRENT WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 1919 IN DEFENCE OF THEIR KING AND COUNTRY AND GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE VICTORY OF HONOUR AND FREEDOM OVER TERROR AND OPPRESSION. THEIR IMPERISHABLE NAMES ARE RECORDED ON THE WALLS OF THE TOWN HALL OF THIS COUNTY BOROUGH AN EXAMPLE TO THOSE WHO COME HEREAFTER."

The back plaque reads: "TO BURTON'S HEROES HONOUR TO THE IMMORTAL DEAD THAT GREAT WHITE COMPANY OF SHINING SOULS WHO GAVE THEIR YOUTH THAT THE WORLD MIGHT GROW OLD IN PEACE 1914 1919."

Additionally, there is a later plaque that states: "REMEMBERING ALSO THOSE WHO DIED IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 1945."

The entire structure is set on a tiered three-stepped base, which is surrounded by a low wall that creates a spacious terrace enclosure for the monument.
