Description
The Severn Wharf Building, which houses the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, is a mid to late 19th-century structure that originally served as a wharf building and warehouse for the Coalbrookdale Company. It features red brick with yellow brick dressings in a Gothick style, characterized by its castellated design, including pinnacles and buttresses. The building has moulded stringcourses and pointed arch window openings with dripmoulds, as well as diamond-paned casements.
On the southeast front, there is a single-storey range with large four-centred arch doorways on either side, and a central polygonal 'apse' that has lancet windows and two flanking castellated turrets. Each turret is topped with a round ornamental terracotta chimney pot. The sides of the building have four gables, each adorned with pointed arch windows. The roof is covered with plain tiles. Originally, there was a basin for barges located adjacent to the wharf building.
