Description
This is a circa 1840 stuccoed house, originally intended as a spa. It is located in Wellington, Shropshire, on Shawbirch Road, Admaston. The main building has a low-pitched slate roof and two storeys, arranged with a 1:3:1 bay facade. The left and right wings project forward, and a central, ground-floor portico features Doric columns and a heavy entablature placed in antis. A string course runs along the exterior and defines the level of the first-floor window sills. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, and the ground-floor windows on the left and right are tripartite sashes. The building has stuccoed chimneys with cornices. To the left is a two-storey red brick wing with three bays, including a central square bay window. This wing adjoins an elliptical arched carriageway with a clock feature above, beneath a hipped roof and featuring a bellcote with a wind vane. The property includes garden area railings made of wrought iron, displaying intersecting tracery and spearheads. Records indicate a mineral spring was first mentioned in 1764; the spa became established in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Around 1842, John Purcell constructed the existing buildings and operated the spa until 1857. The spa continued in use until 1874, after which the building was used as a school.
