Description
Woodcote Hall is a building constructed in 1875 by F. P. Cockerell, largely replacing an 18th-century mansion that was destroyed by fire in the 19th century. Remains of the 18th-century house can be found on the north-west and south-west sides, with some vestiges of 17th-century fabric at the rear (south). One room features fireplaces inscribed with "T.C. 1767" and has stopped and chamfered ceiling beams, where "T.C." refers to Thomas Cotes. Additionally, there is a small stone rubble rear wing that includes stopped and chamfered ceiling beams and a tie-beam roof truss with angle struts.
The 1875 rebuild is designed in a Jacobean/Queen Anne style, constructed from brick with stone dressings and topped with a tiled roof. The building is two stories high with an attic, featuring a north front with a layout of 2:1:2:3:2:1 bays. The left-hand porch and right-hand bay have attic pavilions capped with lead ogee caps. The central canted bay is topped with a Dutch gable, and the façade includes a parapet with a stone balustrade and ball finials, rusticated quoins, and sash windows with Gibbs surrounds, as well as a rusticated round-arched doorway. The east garden front has a layout of 1:1:3:1:1 bays, with a central canted bay and slightly advanced flanking bays, both featuring Dutch gables.
Inside, the central hall boasts a lantern and a coved ceiling, with a staircase that has a balustrade leading to an arcaded landing on three sides. The principal rooms are adorned with plasterwork and chimney pieces from the 1875 period.
