Description
The Parish Church, also known as the Chapel, is a small sandstone ashlar building dating from the late 12th century, featuring a tiled roof with gabled ends and coved eaves. It consists of a single cell that combines both nave and chancel. The south doorway is a notable late 12th-century feature, characterized by two orders of shafts with shaft-rings, crocket capitals, and an arch with one keeled order. The chapel has later restored two-light square windows and angle buttresses at the corners with set-offs. The east window is in the Perpendicular style. At the west end, there is a circa 18th-century octagonal wooden bellcote topped with a lead cupola.
Inside, the chapel boasts a king-post roof with angle struts and an arch-braced structure over the chancel. There are several monuments, including a series of wall tablets dedicated to the Cotes family and an inscribed tomb slab featuring a knight and his wife, likely representing Humphrey Cotes from 1485. The chapel also contains a 17th-century communion rail with balusters, an 18th-century polygonal pulpit with fielded panels, and 19th-century pews that incorporate 18th-century and some 17th-century panelling. Additionally, there are some 18th-century headstones in the churchyard.
