Description
The Round House, also known as Umbrella House, is a single-storey tollhouse dated 1835, which is said to have been designed by Thomas Telford. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a low-pitched hipped slate roof with very widely overhanging eaves. The building has a symmetrical arrangement of windows with a 1:3:1 pattern, where the centre projects forward as a canted bay. It includes two-light stone mullion windows with glazing bars set in plain architraves. The doorway is located in the right-hand return of the bay, featuring a moulded stone architrave and a door with diamond panels and ornate wrought ironwork. At the centre of the building is an ashlar stack topped with a group of four circular shafts linked by a moulded cornice.
