Description

The Wrekin Rifle Range Target Gallery is a target gallery for a rifle range, dating from the early 20th century.

The target gallery is located at the south-eastern end of a roughly rectangular rifle range, which is accessed from the road at its northern end. The rear wall of the target gallery, along with the walls surrounding the target emplacement and trench, is constructed of brick laid in English bond and Garden Wall bond, featuring glazed, shaped capping bricks. The supports and target frames are made of iron, which were originally painted blue.

At the target end, there is a high martlet of earth with square timber baulks on its north-western (firing) side, which may have originally been covered with earth. Behind this, the firing gallery contains twelve iron target frames of the Hythe pattern, some of which still show patches of their original blue paint. These frames are set in a continuous frame trench. The concrete roof of the gallery is supported by iron brackets and T-shaped posts. The rear wall of the target gallery is constructed in Garden Wall bond at the south-western end and in English bond at the north-eastern end, indicating a possible extension of the gallery after the 1928 Ordnance Survey map was created.

Steps lead down from the gallery at its north-eastern end to a corrugated iron target store. The rear wall turns at right angles to face south-east at both ends of the gallery, with square timbers set vertically above these flank walls to create a screen. Further to the south-east, there is a sand bank that serves as a stop butt and follows the rise of the hillside.
