Description
The Ironbridge War Memorial is a town memorial that was unveiled in March 1924. It was designed by Arthur G Walker, a Royal Academician, and cast by AB Burton.
The memorial is made of bronze and stands on a plinth of Cornish granite, which features bronze plaques on each side. At the top, there is a life-sized bronze statue of a soldier, positioned above a square plinth with a domed top and a stepped base. The statue faces west and depicts a soldier in battle dress, wearing a peaked cap, with a backpack and helmet slung over his back, leaning on the muzzle of his rifle. The square plinth is signed by Walker and Burton and has a prominent frieze and base, with straight sides. The platform is accessed by three steps.
Each side of the plinth features a rectangular bronze plaque with relief lettering. The plaque on the north side honors the men of Ironbridge who lost their lives in the First World War, stating: "IN GRATEFUL / AND UNDYING MEMORY / OF THE VALIANT MEN / OF IRON BRIDGE / WHO LAY DOWN / THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1919 / WE THANK OUR GOD UPON / EVERY REMEMBRANCE OF YOU." The names of the fallen are listed on the other sides. The western face includes a plaque that reads: "THE CHURCH CLOCK WAS / ILLUMINATED AS A MEMORIAL / TO THE FOLLOWING MEN OF / IRONBRIDGE / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES / DURING THE / 1939 - 1945 WAR," with the names of those who fell in the Second World War displayed below.
