Description
Orleton Hall is a late 18th-century mansion, believed to have been refronted around 1830 by Edward Haycock for Edward Cludde, whose family has owned the estate since the early 18th century. The house is built on the site of an earlier structure, with some old masonry found in the cellars, suggesting that parts of the core may predate the 18th century. The mansion is set in a small park and features a plain stuccoed brick exterior with a parapet and cornice that conceal a low-pitched hipped slate roof.
The building has three storeys, with the garden front displaying a symmetrical arrangement of three bays on each side, where the central three bays project forward and are topped with a pediment that includes a bullseye in the tympanum. It has sash windows with glazing bars and a central stone pilastered doorcase with a glazed door. The right-hand (south) return has four bays, while the east entrance front also shows a 3:3:3 bay arrangement, with the central section recessed and featuring a Doric portico supported by stone columns and an entablature. There is a three-bay wing to the north-east that is two storeys high, with a blind second storey, and 18th and 19th-century kitchen and service wings to the north.
Inside, the hall features a large bolection mould chimney piece and a rebuilt Jacobean carved wooden chimney-piece that displays the Cludde arms.
