Description

The Bedlam Furnace is an early 18th-century blast furnace located on Waterloo Street in Ironbridge. It has a square plan and features a brick-lined chamber with a partly bricked pointed-arch opening facing the road, as well as another partly bricked opening on the right side. The front of the furnace is supported by two stone lean-to buttresses, one of which contains a circular aperture with a small arched opening below. The furnace ceased operations when the Blists Hill Ironworks was established in the early 19th century. It is believed that this furnace is the one depicted in the well-known painting 'Coalbrookdale by Night' by PJ de Loutherbourg, created around 1801.
