Description
Castle House School, formerly known as Merevale, dates from the late 18th century with early 19th-century and modern alterations. The building has an irregular shape and may have originally consisted of three separate houses. It is constructed of red brick, engraved stucco, and painted stone, featuring a stone plinth. The structure is two storeys plus an attic and has three storeys in parts. It includes sash and casement windows, with some modern casements added.
On the left side, there is a stuccoed wing with a projecting splayed bay that has a sash window in a plain architrave with a triple keyblock. This wing also features a late 19th-century splayed bay window on the ground storey and a semi-circular tripartite window on the second storey, all topped by a shaped gable with a scrolled cartouche and a segmental pediment.
The right brick wing has two slightly projecting bays. The left bay has a stone-coped gable with reused human head kneelers and a casement window in a stuccoed scrolled surround. The right bay features a window with early 19th-century 'Y' glazing bars, a wood balcony with slat balusters, and a shaped gable with a segmental pediment above. A modern doorway has been added to the left, alongside a recessed doorway flanked by half-round Tuscan pilasters, which has a door with attractive 19th-century coloured glazing. The building has corbelled eaves and is covered with tiles.
