CHETWYND END (East Side) Castle House School

2. Formerly known as Merevale. Late C18 with early C19 and modern alterations. Irregular, and may originally have consisted of 3 separate houses. Red brick, engraved stucco and painted stone; stone plinth; 2 storeys plus attic and 3 storeys; sash and casement windows with some inserted modern casements; stuccoed wing on left-hand side has projecting splayed bay with sash window in plain architrave with triple keyblock, a late C19 splayed bay window to ground storey, a semi-circular tripartite window to 2nd storey and the whole surmounted by shaped gable with scrolled cartouche and segmental pediment. Brick wing to right has 2 slightly projecting bays, that at left with stone-coped gable having re-used human head kneelers, also casement window in stuccoed scrolled surround. Bay on right-hand side has window with early C19 'Y' glazing bars and wood balcony with slat balusters, and shaped gable surmounted by segmental pediment; modern doorway added on left and, to left again, a recessed doorway flanked by half-round Tuscan pilasters, and door with good C19 coloured glazing. Corbelled eaves; tiles.
